[Lord of Hydrogen: Nomad Kevin] Ep. 29

Episode 29: Light in the Darkness, 'The Silent Generator' (feat. Early PAFC Model)

Late Autumn, 1985. Deep in the forest of a deserted island in the East Sea.

"Huff... huff... Kevin, I can't... I can't run anymore..."

Seoyoon collapsed against a thick tree trunk, gasping for air. Behind them on the beach, the chaotic sounds of intermittent explosions, the shouts of H-Group agents, and the splashing of a frenzied shark pack echoed through the night. The 'Hydrogen Mine' operation had been a success, but the cost of their escape was grueling.

Kevin supported Seoyoon, scanning the surroundings. The dense tropical-like foliage was a wall of absolute darkness, blocking even the faint moonlight.

"Just a little further, Seoyoon. I found a place earlier."

Kevin led her to a natural cave hidden beneath a massive rock formation he had spotted while searching for water days ago. The entrance was shrouded by thick briars—a perfect, natural fortress invisible from the outside.

Despair in the Cave and the Need for 'Silence'

Inside the cave, it was pitch black and freezing. Though they had found cover, the terror remained. Outside, the sweeping beams of H-Group’s searchlights sliced through the forest canopy.

"They've started searching the woods. If we light a fire or make a sound, it's over," Kevin whispered.

Seoyoon looked devastated. They had abandoned the Stirling engine on the beach. All they had were meager rations, some water, and the 'material pouch' Kevin protected like his own life. In the cold cave, without light or heat, they were truly isolated.

At that moment, the loud roar of the Stirling engine flashed through Kevin's mind.

'I need a generator that makes no sound... no smoke, no light leaks. I need perfect, silent energy.'

[Kevin’s Tech Evolution: The Birth of a True Fuel Cell]

Kevin began pulling materials from his pouch: lead plates and lead oxide scavenged from shipwreck batteries, and most importantly, a few pieces of 'Platinum-coated fine metal mesh.'

  • The Limitation: The Stirling engine (external combustion) generates too much heat and noise for stealth.

  • The Challenge: He needed to implement a 'Fuel Cell'—a device that generates electricity directly through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. In 1985, this was a concept reserved for cutting-edge aerospace technology.

"Seoyoon, do you still have the hydrogen storage bag we filled at the beach?"

Implementing the Makeshift 'PAFC'

Kevin placed a flat stone on the cave floor and set a heat-resistant plastic container from the shipwreck on top. He carefully poured a thick liquid he had collected from battery remains—Concentrated Phosphoric Acid ($H_3PO_4$). This would serve as the electrolyte.

"What... what is this going to be?" Seoyoon whispered in the dark.

"I'm going to show you real magic. The kind that lights up the world without a sound."

Kevin submerged two platinum-coated meshes into the phosphoric acid. He connected the hydrogen bag to one side and left the other side exposed to the air (oxygen). It was crude and primitive, but it was the early model of the Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cell (PAFC)—one of the quietest generators in human history.

[Technical Principle: The Silent Chemical Reaction]

  1. Hydrogen Supply (Anode): Stored Hydrogen ($H_2$) meets the Platinum Catalyst and splits into protons ($H^+$) and electrons ($e^-$).

  2. Electron Flow (Electricity): The electrons travel through an external circuit, creating an electric current.

  3. Oxygen Reaction (Cathode): The traveling electrons and protons meet oxygen ($O_2$) from the air to create water ($H_2O$) and a small amount of heat. No noise is produced in this process.

A Faint Blue Light Piercing the Dark

With trembling hands, Kevin connected two wires to a small light bulb.

Click.

Suddenly, a miracle occurred inside the cave. A faint but unmistakable bluish glow began to emanate from the bulb's filament. There was no engine roar, no acrid smoke—only the quiet elegance of a chemical reaction.

"Oh..."

Tears streamed down Seoyoon’s face. That tiny light was more than just illumination; it was proof of life in the crushing darkness and a signal of hope that they could outsmart H-Group and survive.

Kevin gripped Seoyoon’s hand tightly. Under the blue glow, their shadows stretched long against the cave wall.

But the moment of peace was short-lived. The sound of a snapping branch echoed from just outside.

Crunch—

"It's near here. The tracks end. Search every inch!"

The voices of the H-Group pursuit team were right in front of them. Kevin quickly cupped his hands over the bulb to hide the glow. Could this silent light truly protect them?
